I was diagnosed with bowel cancer and luckily Mr Thornton and his team carried out this major surgery on 10 May 2018. At all times both before and after surgery I was kept fully informed by him and his great team of what was going on and I was discharged home within 6 days. Every nurse who has looked after me both in the Maelor Hospital and at home have said what a neat scar I have and it is healing really well and my pain levels have been much lower than I had expected. I fully believe that the care and attention I have received has been nothing short of first class

Although things are still really raw I felt that it was the right time to write this. My Dad was admitted to hospital on 28th August and sadly passed away on 1st September During what was the longest few days of my family's life Mr Thornton showed such kindness and empathy. Every time he came onto the Ward he always came to see not only how my Dad was but to see how we were too. He explained things thoroughly every step of the way. We will be forever grateful to him.

My father was recently admitted to hospital and was assigned to Mr Thornton during an overnight stay in SAU. After a bank holiday of being under doctors on call only, Mr Thornton moved very quickly to fully diagnose my dad on the Tuesday following bank holiday Monday and took time mid way through his ward rounds to explain to my mother and I what may be causing the problem. A CT scan was swiftly arranged that same day and Mr Thornton met us at my fathers bedside that very same afternoon to explain in detail the outcome. Mr Thornton was patient, extremely caring and moved quickly and efficiently to mitigate our anxiety. He spoke to us using terms that we could understand and made us feel unrushed when taking time to answer our many queries. Mr Thornton is one in a million and I would have no hesitation in recommending his professionalism, efficiency and caring nature to any future patient. You would be in wonderful hands!!!

I had a resection on Thursday. I have Crohn's disease and suffered for so long with it. He got me in so quick for surgery! He is one of the nicest men you'll ever meet, Kind, caring and fantastic surgeon. His team are all lovely even his secretary who has really gone out of her way for me I can't thank her enough either. Thank you mr Thornton you should be proud on being a down to earth surgeon and "normal" Not a lot of medical people like you at all.

Specialises in

  • General surgery

Profile

Upon completing medical school in Sheffield in 2000, my early surgical training was completed in South Yorkshire following which I moved to Merseyside to complete my higher surgical training. During this period I also completed a 2 year period of research into colorectal cancer towards my MD thesis.
I have recently been appointed as a Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, with a subspecialty interest in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery. Prior to commencing this position, I completed a 6-month Laparoscopic fellowship working with Professor Pete Sagar at St James Hospital in Leeds. This training allowed me to extend my skills with advanced laparoscopic colorectal procedures. I have experienced the breadth of subspecialty colorectal practice, training in both tertiary referral and district general units. I manage both elective and emergency general surgical conditions.
My expertise is within all aspects of gastrointestinal disease, but in particular, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, incontinence and benign proctology including fistula and fissure. I am also trained in most aspects of general surgery such as abdominal wall hernia and gallstones.
